I've been personally working in the space of IT, SEO and Paid Ads services and solutions for almost 20 years since 1999, in fact way before AdWords and the pay per click models were even launched. Back then I was involved with consulting blue chip companies regarding their Network Infrastructure with likes Microsoft MCSE, Cisco CCNA and providing them with training solutions towards getting their Network Engineers accredited and certified through onsite and off site Training Bespoke solutions. As well providing many of them with additional sourced short and long term contractors.
I then went into SEO (whitehat and blackhat) alike and getting websites to the top of the search engines organically. As the years have rolled on I have seen that landscape evolve and change tremendously to the point PBN (private blog networks) as well as so called whitehat diverse link building strategies, but with Google's past zoo animal attacks and their ever changing algorithm changes.
I have found and the time it now takes to rank for medium to strong competition keywords just can not always legitimise the true investment of money x time = result/s that unfortunately I have seen way to often can be wiped out in just 1 day, in one foul swoop, with no mercy given and very often to organisations that were not even working against Google's terms of guidance and advice, and yet still lively hoods gone. The risk and reward ratio is just no longer cutting it, and I really can not any longer legitimately considered it a good long term solo web based marketing plan PERIOD!. There is a place for it definitely, but by itself as the be all and end all hear me and hear me good WAKE UP & SMELL THE COFFEE!
